Chapter 12

The conversion from ozone to oxygen went smoothly for the newcomers, and on the fourth day we watched as they had their first steak dinner. I know it doesn't sound like much in the total scheme of things, but starvation gives you a unique outlook on almost everything, especially food. Angela and her boys existed on the Provinces primarily by stealing their food, and that's the part that gives me pause. Stealing food from the Denizens, albeit I don't condone doing that, is one thing, but stealing food from the demons? No one knows exactly what that is, or worst-case scenario . . . who that was. So, a steak dinner at the Ugly Duckling ranks high enough to almost be a religious experience.

A worthy footnote to Angela and her boys is Terrell. He was the one who asked for Angela's help that night at Mt. Arcadia and at the time seemed very tight with his brothers. Since then, we've come to realize he is very jealous of Angela and anyone who looks at her too long or has a conversation without him being in attendance. Terrell tries to conceal it but having him around is very similar to having a pet rhino in the house. Demi says he's in love with Angela and she hasn't figured it out yet. I'd like to be a fly on the wall when she does.

Jean, my new cohort in crime at our offices in Phoenix, has informed me this morning that I have a meeting to attend shortly before lunch. She took the liberty of contacting and inviting every one of the existing clan leaders in the Larger World to have brunch with us at our headquarters building. Each one was requested to RSVP, and Jean took care of the catering for our first gala shindig. Understand, Curly and his bunch of thugs were more likely to have the clan leaders shot on sight than meet with them for any reason. There has always been bad blood between the Thaumaturgists and virtually everyone else. The previous Wizards, and I use the term loosely, felt they were above the law, or at times told everybody else that they were the law. Ultimately, it didn't work out very well for them, but the rest of us are infinitely better off because of their failure.

My first mentor, a thaumaturgist named Nicolas, once told me that the way to a lasting peace was to give the natives beads, it makes them friendly. I'm not sure of what constitutes beads, but I felt sure Queen Mother and Jean would come up with something. Anything short of trying to kill them would be an improvement over the last heads of my clan. I'm pretty sure that might be possible, as long as Murphy doesn't show up to play. If he does, then all bets are off.

I was secretly hoping no one would reserve their seat at the dinner table and I could just go back to work no worse for the wear, but it turns out there's not that much hope in the universe.
